Former Saurashtra Captain Sitanshu Kotak Takes on Role as India Batting Coach

Former Saurashtra batsman and captain, Sitanshu Kotak, has recently stepped into the role of India’s batting coach, aiming to revamp the team’s performance at the crease. New Coaching Team

Kotak was not initially part of the coaching staff appointed in 2024, which saw Rahul Dravid take over as the head coach with Morne Morkel, Abhishek Nayar, and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches. However, following a review meeting to address India’s poor batting display, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) brought in Kotak just before the home series against England.

Coaching Career

After concluding his playing career, Kotak wasted no time delving into coaching. He completed Level 1 and 2 coaching courses from both the BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). In 2014, Kotak landed his first major coaching role as the head coach of the Saurashtra team, leading them to victory in the Ranji Trophy in 2020.

Additionally, Kotak was appointed as the head coach of the India A team in 2019, succeeding Rahul Dravid who moved to head the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He has also served as a batting coach at the NCA and worked as an assistant coach for the now-defunct IPL team Gujarat Lions.

Playing Career

Although Kotak did not get the chance to represent India at the international level, he made a significant impact in domestic cricket. Over his two-decade-long career, Kotak played 130 first-class matches, amassing 8061 runs at an average of 41.76, including 15 centuries and 55 half-centuries. He also contributed with the ball, claiming 70 wickets in first-class cricket.

In List A cricket, Kotak appeared in 89 matches, scoring 3083 runs with three centuries and 26 half-centuries, along with 54 wickets to his name.
