Former Indian Pacer Venkatesh Prasad Criticizes Head Coach Gautam Gambhir After India’s Defeat

Former Indian fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad recently criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir following India’s 408-run loss to South Africa in a Test match in Guwahati. Prasad expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and management decisions, specifically highlighting their obsession with all-rounders in the playing XI.

India’s Defeat to South Africa

After winning the series opener in Kolkata, India faced a crushing defeat at the hands of South Africa in the second Test, resulting in a 2-0 series loss. Chasing a target of 549 runs, the Indian team was bowled out for just 140 runs in their final innings, showcasing a lackluster performance in all three departments of the game.

Criticism of All-Rounder Selection

Prasad criticized Gambhir’s emphasis on all-rounders in the team, stating that the tactic had backfired. He pointed out that the team’s tactics, execution, and body language were subpar and urged them to rethink their strategies before their next Test assignment.

Prasad took to social media to express his disappointment, stating, “Really disappointed by how India is going about in Test cricket. The all-rounder obsession is absolute brain-fade especially when you don’t bowl them.”

Selection Strategy Under Scrutiny

India’s selection strategy, particularly regarding all-rounders who were not utilized effectively with the ball, came under scrutiny. Prasad emphasized the importance of picking specialist players based on their performances in domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy rather than their IPL form.

He mentioned names like Yash Rathod, Shubham Sharma, Baba Indrajith, and Smaran Ravichandran, who have been consistently performing in domestic cricket but are often overlooked due to their absence from the IPL.

Concerns Over Team Selection

Prasad raised concerns about selecting players with modest first-class averages in the Test side based solely on IPL performances. He stressed the need for specialists in Test cricket and criticized the push to justify flawed selections over the past year and a half, stating that it could be detrimental to Indian cricket’s interests.

Former Indian opener WV Raman also supported Prasad’s views on team selections, acknowledging the former pacer’s insightful critique of the current state of Indian cricket.

Overall, the criticism from Venkatesh Prasad sheds light on the challenges faced by the Indian team and the importance of strategic selection and performance-based decisions in shaping the future of Indian cricket.
