Riyan Parag to lose Rajasthan Royals captaincy after ownership change
Rajasthan Royals Captaincy Prediction: Could Yashasvi Jaiswal Replace Riyan Parag for IPL 2027?
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season now over, franchises are already preparing for the next campaign. Coaching appointments, player trades and squad planning are beginning to shape the conversation around IPL 2027. At Rajasthan Royals (RR), one of the biggest questions may be who leads the team: will Riyan Parag remain captain, or could vice-captain Yashasvi Jaiswal take over?
Reports suggest a leadership change is possible following the Royals’ change in ownership. Jaiswal, who has served as Parag’s deputy and stepped in when required, is reportedly being considered for the role. However, no official announcement has been made, and the franchise’s plans will depend on its final ownership arrangements and internal review of the team’s performance.
Why a Captaincy Change Is Being Discussed
According to Times of India journalist Sahil Malhotra, the new ownership group could look at appointing Jaiswal as captain. The suggestion has attracted attention because Jaiswal was viewed as a leading candidate for the job before Parag was selected last season. He has also captained the Royals in Parag’s absence, giving him some experience within the franchise’s leadership structure.
Jaiswal’s case is supported by his importance to the team. The left-handed opener is one of Rajasthan’s central batting figures, and his aggressive approach at the top of the order can set the tone for an innings. A captaincy appointment would, however, represent a significant step up. Jaiswal has limited leadership experience in the IPL and domestic cricket, so the franchise would need to decide whether his on-field influence and familiarity with the squad outweigh that relative lack of experience.
For now, the captaincy prediction remains uncertain. Parag led Rajasthan to the playoffs in 2026, a result that gives him a strong argument to continue. But a new ownership group may want to establish its own direction, and that could bring a fresh assessment of the team’s leadership.
Parag’s Record as Rajasthan Royals Captain
Parag took charge after Sanju Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He had previously filled in for Samson during the 2025 season, leading the Royals in eight matches. Rajasthan won two and lost six of those games, while Parag scored 393 runs. His appointment made him the youngest captain in Rajasthan Royals history and one of the youngest players to lead an IPL side.
In IPL 2026, Parag guided the team to the playoffs, but Rajasthan’s campaign ended in Qualifier 2 with a defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT). Across 22 matches as captain, his record stands at 10 wins and 12 losses, a win rate of 45.45 per cent. Those figures offer a mixed picture: the Royals reached the knockout stage, but the team did not make the final.
Parag also contributed with the bat, scoring 309 runs during the season. His output was below the level he achieved in 2024, when he made 574 runs for Rajasthan. Injuries have also been a concern at times, potentially complicating the franchise’s planning around a player expected to lead both on and off the field.
Jaiswal’s Opportunity—and the Risks
If Rajasthan appoints Jaiswal, the decision would place responsibility on a player whose value is already clear as a batter. Captaining a high-profile IPL team involves more than making tactical calls during matches. The role requires managing senior players, responding to pressure, communicating with coaches and maintaining consistency over a long tournament.
Jaiswal’s familiarity with the Royals could help ease that transition. Having served as vice-captain and led the side when Parag was unavailable, he would not be entering the role without any exposure to leadership. Still, a full season as captain would test his ability to balance personal performance with the broader needs of the team.
There may also be a practical question for Rajasthan: would handing Jaiswal the captaincy help him grow, or place an unnecessary burden on a key top-order batter? The answer could depend on the support structure around him, including the appointment of senior players and the coaching staff.
Ownership Deal Adds Another Layer
The captaincy discussion comes as Rajasthan Royals undergo a major ownership transition. In May 2026, the Lakshmi Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla agreed to acquire a majority stake in the franchise for a reported US$1.65 billion, approximately ₹15,660 crore. The proposed acquisition extends beyond the IPL team to the wider Royals group, including Paarl Royals in South Africa’s SA20 competition and Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League.
The Competition Commission of India has cleared the deal, but formal approval and ratification from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council are still pending. The transaction is expected to move through its closing stages in the third quarter of 2026. Until the required approvals are complete, the ownership change—and any decisions directly linked to it—should be treated as a developing story rather than a settled outcome.
A new ownership group may review the franchise’s long-term strategy, including leadership, recruitment and team culture. That does not automatically mean Parag will lose the captaincy. The Royals could instead decide that continuity is more valuable after a playoff run, particularly if they believe the team can improve under his leadership.
Parag’s Off-Field Disciplinary Case
Parag also faced disciplinary action during IPL 2026 after he was seen vaping inside the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. The BCCI fined him 25 per cent of his match fee and issued one demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct under Article 2.21, relating to conduct that brings the game into disrepute. Parag accepted the charge.
The incident may form part of the broader scrutiny surrounding his captaincy, but it should be considered alongside his performances and leadership record rather than treated as the sole reason for any potential change.
IPL 2027 Captaincy Prediction: What Happens Next?
At this stage, the most accurate prediction is that Rajasthan Royals are weighing their options rather than preparing to confirm a successor. Parag has the advantage of having led the side to the playoffs, while Jaiswal offers a fresh leadership possibility and has already served as deputy. The ownership transition could influence the final call, but official approvals and franchise announcements will be crucial.
For supporters, the decision will shape more than the team’s match-day leadership. It could signal whether Rajasthan prefers continuity or a new chapter as it builds toward IPL 2027. Until the Royals make their position clear, the Parag-versus-Jaiswal debate remains one of the most compelling captaincy storylines of the upcoming season.
