Ayush Mhatre set to miss rest of Mumbai’s domestic season after surgery for Grade 4 hamstring tear

Ayush Mhatre Hamstring Surgery: Mumbai Batter Faces Four-Month Layoff

Mumbai opener and newly appointed vice-captain Ayush Mhatre is expected to miss around four months of cricket after undergoing surgery for a severe tear in his right hamstring. The 19-year-old sustained the injury during Mumbai’s opening match of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium, bringing his return to competitive cricket to an abrupt halt.

The setback is a major interruption for one of India’s most promising young batters. Mhatre had enjoyed a breakthrough year, captaining India to the Under-19 World Cup title and making an impact for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. But a series of hamstring problems has repeatedly disrupted his progress, and the latest injury could rule him out for the remainder of Mumbai’s domestic campaign.

Details of Mhatre’s Hamstring Operation

According to a report by The Times of India, Mhatre underwent a 90-minute procedure at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The operation was performed by sports orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who has treated several high-profile Indian athletes, including cricketers Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, as well as Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, Vinesh Phogat and PV Sindhu.

A source quoted in the report said Mhatre underwent a repair for a recurrent Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring. He was described as comfortable and able to walk after the operation, with discharge from hospital expected the same evening. While those are encouraging early signs, walking soon after surgery does not mean a player is ready to resume the explosive movements required in professional cricket.

The reported four-month recovery timeline will likely involve several stages, including post-surgery rehabilitation, strength work and a gradual return to running and batting drills. A final decision on his comeback will depend on how the repaired muscle responds and whether Mhatre can regain match fitness without discomfort.

Injury Ends Ranji Trophy Return Early

Mhatre was batting on 48 when the injury occurred on the opening day of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy fixture. He was running between the wickets when his right hamstring gave way, forcing him to leave the field and miss the rest of the match. The incident was particularly frustrating because it came during his return to first-class cricket after an extended rehabilitation period.

Mumbai still secured a commanding result against Chandigarh. After scoring 429 in their first innings, the hosts dismissed their opponents twice to win by an innings and 155 runs. The team’s emphatic victory, however, offered little comfort regarding the loss of a young player expected to contribute at the top of the order and in a leadership role.

The injury also puts Mhatre’s availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled to begin on December 14, in serious doubt. With a four-month layoff anticipated, he is unlikely to be ready for the competition. Mumbai may need to adjust their batting plans and vice-captaincy arrangements while he focuses on recovery.

A Promising 2026 Interrupted by Repeated Setbacks

Mhatre’s injury history this year began during the IPL. He suffered a left hamstring problem on April 18 while playing for Chennai Super Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The injury occurred while running between the wickets and forced him to leave the tournament before the campaign was complete.

Despite beginning the season with a duck, Mhatre quickly established himself as an important part of CSK’s batting line-up. Operating at No. 3, he scored 201 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 177.87, including two half-centuries. His ability to score quickly and handle responsibility against experienced opposition made his IPL performances one of the encouraging stories of his season.

The initial hamstring injury had consequences beyond the IPL. It kept him out of the T20 Mumbai tournament in June, India A’s tour of Sri Lanka and the Duleep Trophy in August. Mhatre spent close to three months rehabilitating at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before working towards a return.

A later issue involving his right hamstring delayed that comeback. His appearance against Chandigarh was therefore an important opportunity to resume red-ball cricket, but the recurrence turned it into another setback. The contrast between his rapid rise and the repeated interruptions highlights the physical demands young players face when moving between formats and competitions.

What the Recovery Could Mean for Mumbai and India

For Mumbai, Mhatre’s absence creates a gap in both the opening combination and the leadership group. The team will have to identify a replacement who can provide stability at the top of the order, while also managing the demands of a long domestic season. His recovery may also affect the selectors’ plans for upcoming age-group and India A opportunities, although any future selection will depend on fitness and form after his return.

The best-case prediction for Mhatre will depend on a careful, step-by-step rehabilitation rather than a rushed comeback. Hamstring injuries can be especially challenging for batters because sprinting between wickets, changing direction and accelerating from a standing start all place significant strain on the muscle. Returning too soon can increase the risk of another recurrence, potentially extending an already lengthy absence.

For now, the priority will be restoring strength and movement in the repaired hamstring before Mhatre builds back towards cricket-specific training. His youth and strong performances in 2026 offer reason for optimism, but the four-month estimate means patience will be essential. If rehabilitation progresses as planned, the teenager will have an opportunity to return stronger; the immediate focus, however, is ensuring that this latest surgery provides a sound foundation for a sustained comeback.
