Dinesh Karthik names top 5 T20 batters, Virat Kohli at top, Abhishek Sharma snubbed
Dinesh Karthik Names His Top Five Active T20 Batters, With Three RCB Stars on the List
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has shared his prediction of the five best T20 batters currently active in international cricket, selecting a mix of established stars and players he knows closely through Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The list features Virat Kohli, Harry Brook, Rajat Patidar, Jos Buttler and Tim David.
Karthik revealed his choices during a Cricbuzz discussion, which came with one clear condition: every player had to remain active in international cricket. The selection offers a blend of proven consistency, recent form and explosive match-winning ability. It also reflects Karthik’s dual perspective as a former international player and RCB’s batting coach and mentor.
Virat Kohli Leads Karthik’s T20 Batting Picks
Karthik began with Kohli, describing the former India captain as a straightforward choice. In his view, Kohli’s record across international cricket and the Indian Premier League places him among the most accomplished batters the T20 format has seen.
“Let me start with my favourite, and I think it’s fair to say he’s been the greatest T20 batter of all time now,” Karthik said. He pointed to Kohli’s achievements over a career spanning roughly two decades, adding that few players can match the standard he has set in both international cricket and the IPL.
Kohli’s place on the list is built on more than longevity. His ability to pace an innings, find gaps under pressure and shift gears when a chase demands it has made him a dependable presence in T20 cricket. While the format increasingly rewards power hitting, Kohli’s value also lies in his control: he can anchor an innings without allowing the scoring rate to stall.
Harry Brook Earns Praise for His Current Form
England batter Harry Brook was Karthik’s second pick. Karthik highlighted Brook’s strong run of form and his confident approach, describing him as a player capable of changing the direction of a match quickly.
“He is batting probably in the best, most purple of purple patches in T20 cricket,” Karthik said, praising Brook’s impact for England. He also called the batter one of the world’s leading all-format players, underlining the breadth of his game beyond the shortest format.
Brook’s appeal in T20 cricket comes from his willingness to attack without appearing one-dimensional. He can put pressure on bowlers with inventive stroke play and quick scoring, while his experience across formats gives him options against different bowling plans. For England, that combination can be particularly valuable in the middle overs, when a batter must keep the innings moving while managing risk.
Rajat Patidar Makes the Top Five
RCB captain Rajat Patidar was Karthik’s third selection. The coach and mentor praised Patidar’s range against both pace and spin, as well as his ability to take a game away from the opposition in a short burst.
“The consistency with which he’s churning out runs for RCB, being the captain, the range of shots that he has against pace and spin, and his ability to take a game away within a couple of overs—I haven’t seen too many players with that kind of talent,” Karthik said.
Patidar’s inclusion is one of the more notable choices on the list, especially alongside internationally established names such as Kohli and Buttler. His selection reflects the importance of impact as well as reputation: a batter who can accelerate rapidly and handle different types of bowling can alter a T20 contest before the opposition has time to reset.
Karthik has worked with Patidar at RCB, giving him a close view of the captain’s preparation and development. He said he had enjoyed playing alongside Patidar and was now enjoying the opportunity to work with him.
Jos Buttler’s Consistency Keeps Him in the Conversation
England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler occupied the fourth spot. Karthik praised Buttler’s sustained performances for England and in the IPL, calling him one of the most talented batters in world cricket.
Buttler has established himself as a major force in white-ball cricket through his ability to combine clean hitting with adaptable innings-building. Karthik also pointed to his IPL record, including his time with Rajasthan Royals and his subsequent performances for Gujarat Titans.
That versatility is central to Buttler’s value in T20 teams. He can attack from the outset, build an innings when early wickets fall or provide a late surge when the situation calls for it. For a format in which conditions and match situations can change rapidly, that range makes him a dependable option at the top or in the middle order.
Tim David Completes the List
Karthik’s final choice was another RCB player: power-hitter Tim David. He described David as a batter with formidable hitting ability and the capacity to win matches for teams around the world.
“Pure power. He’s scary when he gets going,” Karthik said, pointing to David’s strength against both pace and spin. He also suggested that the batter still has more potential to unlock, despite already making an impact in franchise cricket.
David’s role is often to provide a decisive finishing burst, particularly when a team needs boundaries in the closing overs. His long reach and ability to clear the ropes make him a threat to bowlers who miss their lengths. Karthik’s selection suggests that he sees room for David to become even more consistent as he continues to develop his game.
A List Shaped by Form, Impact and Experience
Karthik’s five choices bring together different strengths: Kohli’s consistency and experience, Brook’s current momentum, Patidar’s attacking range, Buttler’s adaptability and David’s finishing power. Three of the five—Kohli, Patidar and David—are associated with RCB, reflecting Karthik’s close connection to the franchise as well as his assessment of its batting talent.
The list is a personal ranking rather than a definitive measure of T20 ability. Different selections could be made depending on whether the focus is on international records, recent form, franchise performances or a batter’s role within a team. Still, Karthik’s choices highlight a useful point about modern T20 cricket: the best batting line-ups need more than one kind of player. They need reliable anchors, adaptable stroke-makers and finishers capable of changing the result in a handful of deliveries.
Karthik’s top five, as shared in the Cricbuzz discussion, are Virat Kohli, Harry Brook, Rajat Patidar, Jos Buttler and Tim David. Cricket fans may disagree over the order—or the names—but the selection offers plenty to debate as the T20 calendar continues to bring these batters together across international and franchise competitions.
