Afghanistan reach career-best sixth place in ICC ODI rankings after overtaking Sri Lanka
Afghanistan Reach Historic Sixth Place in ICC Men’s ODI Rankings
Afghanistan have climbed to sixth in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, securing the highest position in the country’s history in the format. The rise places them ahead of Sri Lanka and reflects a remarkable transformation for a team that made its ODI debut in 2009.
Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are level on 94 rating points, but Afghanistan’s ranking position has moved above their rivals in the latest update published by the International Cricket Council. The achievement puts Afghanistan among the leading sides in one-day cricket and ahead of several established teams, including England, Bangladesh and the West Indies.
The latest standings are led by India on 115 points, followed by New Zealand with 109. South Africa and Pakistan occupy third and fourth place, while Australia are fifth with 102 points. Afghanistan are sixth, Sri Lanka seventh, England eighth on 93, Bangladesh ninth on 81 and the West Indies tenth on 79.
A rapid rise in international cricket
Afghanistan’s ascent has been built on years of steady progress, but recent performances have strengthened the impression that they can compete consistently with the world’s best. Their victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup were among the tournament’s most memorable results. The team also reached the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, underlining their growing strength across formats.
The ODI ranking milestone is particularly significant because it reflects more than a single upset or short burst of form. Afghanistan have developed a competitive core of experienced players and emerging batters, supported by a bowling attack capable of changing the course of a match. Their success has also helped expand the country’s profile in international cricket, inspiring supporters at home and attracting attention from fans around the world.
Four-match Ireland series fuels Afghanistan’s ranking rise
A dominant ODI campaign against Ireland provided an important boost to Afghanistan’s momentum. They completed a 4-0 series victory, displaying the ability to win in different ways: by setting a challenging total, chasing under pressure and using their bowlers to defend a target.
Afghanistan won the second ODI in Bready by 92 runs and followed up with a three-wicket victory in Belfast in the third match. In the fourth game, they posted an imposing 343 for nine before restricting Ireland to secure a 42-run win. They then completed the clean sweep by successfully chasing in the fifth ODI.
The series was also a showcase for Afghanistan’s batting depth. Sediqullah Atal finished as the leading run-scorer with 313 runs. His standout innings included a powerful 143 from 120 deliveries in the fourth ODI, featuring 17 fours and four sixes. He followed that performance with 98 from 112 balls in the final match.
Ibrahim Zadran contributed another century in the fourth ODI, making 107 from 118 deliveries. In the deciding game, Rahmat Shah delivered a commanding unbeaten 143 from 133 balls to guide the chase. Rashid Khan was named Player of the Series despite appearing in only three matches, a reminder of the influence he can have with his leg-spin and leadership.
Key players strengthen Afghanistan’s ODI outlook
Individual success has accompanied the team’s progress. Rashid Khan’s standing among the leading ODI bowlers and Azmatullah Omarzai’s position at the top of the all-rounder rankings highlight the quality Afghanistan can call upon. Rashid offers a proven wicket-taking threat, while Omarzai’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives the side valuable balance.
Afghanistan have won 96 of their 191 ODI matches, maintaining a win-loss ratio of 1.09. That record reflects a team that has moved beyond simply competing for individual victories. The next challenge is to sustain its results over time and perform consistently against top-ranked opponents, particularly when the pressure of major tournaments is at its highest.
T20I whitewash adds to the winning momentum
Afghanistan’s recent success has not been limited to one-day cricket. They also completed a 3-0 T20I series whitewash against Zimbabwe, finishing with a convincing seven-wicket win in Sharjah. The result extended their strong run in white-ball cricket and gave the squad another confidence boost.
Spinner Noor Ahmad was the standout performer in the final match, breaking through Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order as the visitors were dismissed for just 79 in fewer than 15 overs. Afghanistan then completed the chase comfortably, sealing the clean sweep without needing a prolonged contest.
The result demonstrated the effectiveness of Afghanistan’s spin options in conditions that can favour slower bowlers. It also showed how quickly their attack can put an opponent under pressure when early wickets are followed by disciplined bowling through the middle overs.
What comes next: Afghanistan turn to Test cricket
After their achievements in the ODI and T20I formats, Afghanistan will now shift their attention to a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe. The longer format presents a different test, requiring patience, sustained concentration and the ability to adapt over several days. Carrying their white-ball confidence into Test cricket will be a key objective, though success in the format will depend on how effectively the team adjusts its tactics and batting approach.
Afghanistan’s rise to sixth in the ODI rankings offers a compelling prediction of what could come next: the team is increasingly capable of challenging established cricketing nations, but maintaining its position will require continued results against strong opposition. With a productive batting group, high-impact spin bowlers and recent series wins across formats, Afghanistan have reasons to be optimistic.
The historic ranking is both a reward for recent performances and a marker of the work still ahead. If Afghanistan can build on their Ireland series sweep, keep their key players fit and translate their momentum into consistent performances, their place among the world’s leading ODI teams may prove to be more than a brief milestone.
