Ajinkya Rahane issues big warning to Devdutt Padikkal ahead of Galle Test

Exciting Opportunity for Devdutt Padikkal as India Gears Up for Sri Lanka Test Series

The Indian National Cricket Team, led by Shubman Gill, is all set to embark on a crucial two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting on August 15 in Galle. As the team prepares for the series opener, there is a buzz surrounding Devdutt Padikkal and the potential opportunity that awaits him.

Padikkal’s Chance to Shine

With Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the upcoming Test series due to a right big-toe stress injury, Devdutt Padikkal is expected to step up and claim the crucial number three spot in India’s Test XI. The 26-year-old left-handed batter has been making waves with his strong domestic performances and current form, making him a strong contender for the position.

Padikkal has been in exceptional form, showcasing his talent during India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI by smashing an unbeaten 142. His impressive 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, where he scored 543 runs in six matches at an average of over 60, further solidifies his case for a spot in the Test squad.

Rahane’s Vote of Confidence

Former Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has expressed confidence in Padikkal’s abilities, especially in the conditions expected in Sri Lanka. Rahane believes that Padikkal’s skill set, particularly against spin, will be an asset to the team. He emphasized the importance of Padikkal settling in early in his innings and being proactive at the number three position.

Rahane mentioned in a video on his YouTube channel, “The Sri Lankan conditions will suit him (Devdutt Padikkal) really well. He just needs to overcome the initial phase because he will bat at No. 3. Once he is set, he has the complete arsenal against spin off the front and back foot.”

Challenges Ahead

Despite India’s strong track record against Sri Lanka in Test cricket, Rahane has cautioned against complacency. The current ICC World Test Championship standings make each Test win crucial, as India is currently fifth in the points table for the 2025-27 cycle. A successful series against Sri Lanka could significantly boost India’s chances of making it to the WTC final.

Rahane stressed the importance of not underestimating Sri Lanka, as the team is also eager to perform well in Tests. He believes that the upcoming Test series will be closely contested and urged the Indian team to focus on identifying and capitalizing on crucial moments to secure victory.

As the anticipation builds for the Test series in Sri Lanka, all eyes will be on Devdutt Padikkal as he looks to make a mark and solidify his position in the Indian Test XI. With Rahane’s vote of confidence and the team’s determination to succeed, fans can expect an exciting and closely fought series between India and Sri Lanka.
