BCCI clarifies stance on Indian players in foreign leagues, explains VVS Laxman’s role
BCCI President Mithun Manhas Discusses India’s 2027 ODI World Cup Plans
With the 2027 ODI World Cup drawing closer, India’s preparations are taking shape amid changes, selection debates and questions about player availability. Some challenges—including injuries and the departure of chief selector Ajit Agarkar—are outside the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s control. But the board’s broader approach to team management and development remains under close attention.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas has addressed several issues in an interview with Sportstar, including Agarkar’s time in the selection role, VVS Laxman’s responsibilities within Indian cricket and whether centrally contracted Indian players could be allowed to feature in overseas franchise leagues. His comments offer a glimpse into how the board views the people and policies shaping the national team ahead of a major 50-over tournament.
Mithun Manhas Praises Ajit Agarkar’s Selection Tenure
Agarkar’s period as chief selector included scrutiny and controversy, as is often the case when decisions affect established players and emerging talent. Manhas, however, assessed his tenure in the context of India’s results and the way the selection group worked with the national team’s coaching staff.
During Agarkar’s time in the role, India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Asia Cup. Manhas described those achievements as evidence of a successful period, while also crediting the wider selection committee rather than attributing the outcomes to one individual alone.
“As far as Ajit’s tenure is concerned, I think he has done a fantastic job, overseeing the two World Cup (2024, 2026) victories and the Asia Cup (2025) triumph,” Manhas told Sportstar. He added that Agarkar’s decision to move on was his own and said the selectors had maintained a constructive relationship with the coaches.
That working relationship matters because selection is not simply a matter of comparing statistics. Coaches and selectors must weigh form, fitness, team balance and the demands of particular conditions. Clear communication can help them identify suitable combinations and make decisions with longer-term goals in mind. As India builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, coordination between these groups will remain important—especially as the team balances established performers with players pushing for a place in the squad.
VVS Laxman’s Role in India’s Cricket Structure
Manhas also clarified how VVS Laxman fits into the national setup. The former India batter heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), which plays a role in player development, skills training, rehabilitation and fitness. The position gives Laxman a broad view of the progress and readiness of players across different levels of Indian cricket.
His responsibilities extend beyond the CoE. Laxman oversees India A teams and can step in to coach the senior side when international schedules overlap and head coach Gautam Gambhir is unavailable. Manhas pointed to Laxman’s involvement with the team during India’s 2026 Asian Games campaign in Japan and a short T20I series against Zimbabwe as examples of that flexibility.
“He oversees the India A teams, and whenever multiple teams are touring simultaneously and Gambhir is busy, Laxman takes charge,” Manhas said. He added that Laxman’s understanding of players’ fitness and development allows him to offer useful input to selectors.
The arrangement reflects the growing complexity of the international calendar. India may have senior, A and age-group teams playing abroad at the same time, making experienced coaches and administrators essential to maintaining continuity. Laxman’s CoE role may also help connect development work with selection decisions, giving selectors additional information when assessing a player’s readiness for higher-level cricket.
Will Indian Players Be Allowed to Join Overseas T20 Leagues?
One question frequently raised by fans is whether Indian players will be permitted to play in franchise competitions outside India. Overseas leagues can offer players experience in unfamiliar conditions and provide opportunities to work with international teammates and coaches. At the same time, allowing contracted Indian players to participate could affect scheduling, workload management and the exclusivity of the Indian Premier League.
For now, Manhas said the BCCI has no plans to change its policy. “As of now, the rules remain the same. We haven’t had any discussions around that topic,” he said.
The answer means Indian players will continue to be governed by the existing restrictions unless the board formally revisits them. The issue may return to debate as global franchise cricket expands, but Manhas’s comments indicate that no immediate policy shift is under consideration. The BCCI will need to balance players’ professional opportunities with their commitments to India and the domestic cricket structure if the subject comes back before the board.
What the Comments Mean for India’s 2027 World Cup Prediction
Manhas’s remarks do not offer a direct prediction about India’s chances at the 2027 ODI World Cup, but they highlight several factors that could influence the team’s prospects. A stable selection process, effective communication between coaches and selectors, and a strong pathway from India A to the senior side can all contribute to a deeper and more adaptable squad.
Still, tournament success cannot be guaranteed by administration alone. India will need key players to stay fit, maintain form and perform under pressure in different conditions. The 2027 World Cup will also demand careful planning around workload, squad balance and the transition of players across formats. The BCCI’s current emphasis on coordination and development provides part of the foundation, while the eventual results will depend on decisions made closer to the tournament and performances on the field.
For supporters, the president’s comments offer reassurance about the board’s view of its recent selection leadership and a clearer picture of Laxman’s responsibilities. They also settle, for now, the question of overseas franchise cricket: the rules remain unchanged. As preparations continue, attention will increasingly turn to India’s ODI form, emerging talent and the fitness of players expected to form the core of the 2027 World Cup campaign.
