Gujarat Titans officials question Ashish Nehra over backing Rahul Tewatia and 2 others before IPL Auction
IPL 2027 Auction Prediction: Ashish Nehra Reportedly Backs Three Gujarat Titans Players
With franchises beginning to assess their squads ahead of the IPL 2027 players’ auction, questions are emerging about which players Gujarat Titans (GT) will retain, release or consider replacing. A report from journalist Sahil Malhotra suggests that head coach Ashish Nehra strongly supports Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan and Jayant Yadav, despite concerns within the franchise about the trio’s recent contributions.
The claims, shared during a live session of Beyond the Boundary, have prompted discussion about the balance between a coach’s faith in familiar players and a franchise’s need to refresh its squad. With the auction still ahead, no retention decisions have been confirmed. But the reported disagreement could become an important talking point as GT shape their plans for the next season.
Reported differences within the Gujarat Titans camp
According to Malhotra, some GT officials have questioned the value and role of Tewatia, Shahrukh and Jayant, while Nehra remains keen to keep them in the setup. The journalist suggested that Nehra’s influence over retention decisions may determine whether the players stay with the team.
“It depends on Ashish Nehra and how much say he has in retention matters,” Malhotra said, as quoted in the discussion. He added that there was a section within the franchise asking what the three players currently offer the team.
Malhotra also questioned Jayant’s limited involvement, saying he could recall little from the spinner’s recent time with GT beyond one appearance and a notable dismissal. Those remarks reflect the journalist’s assessment, rather than an official statement from the franchise. Gujarat Titans have not publicly confirmed any dispute or announced their IPL 2027 retention strategy.
Rahul Tewatia’s role as a finisher under scrutiny
Rahul Tewatia became a key figure in GT’s lower-middle order after joining the franchise ahead of the 2022 season. Known for his ability to produce late-innings boundaries, he has often been viewed as a potential match-winner capable of changing a game in a short burst. That reputation, however, has also brought expectations of consistent finishing performances.
Tewatia’s first season with Gujarat was encouraging, with a reported batting average of 31.00. Since then, his returns have been less consistent, and his averages have remained below 30 in the following four seasons, according to the figures cited in the original report. In IPL 2026, he scored 190 runs across 15 innings at an average of 27.14.
Those numbers do not tell the whole story of a finisher’s value. Lower-order batters often face fewer deliveries and are asked to take risks from the outset, making their average an incomplete measure of impact. Strike rate, boundary frequency, match situations and success in close finishes are also important. Still, GT’s reported questions may reflect a broader concern: whether Tewatia can deliver often enough to justify a specialist role in a tightly balanced squad.
The report further claimed that Gujarat have not secured a clear backup finisher, which could help explain why Nehra is reluctant to move on from Tewatia. If accurate, that would make the auction a key opportunity for GT to add depth and competition rather than relying on one established option.
Shahrukh Khan’s numbers and the case for a fresh start
Shahrukh Khan has also been associated with the power-hitting role, but his recent IPL returns have varied. The figures cited in the report show batting averages of 18.14 in 2024, 29.83 in 2025 and 10.75 in 2026. The middle season offered a more promising return, while the latest campaign appears to have renewed questions about his consistency.
As with Tewatia, Shahrukh’s role requires context. A player selected to attack at the death may have limited time to settle, and a small number of innings can significantly affect a season’s average. Even so, franchises will usually assess whether a batter can contribute reliably against different bowling styles and whether the squad has alternative options for the same role.
For GT, the decision may come down to how they define Shahrukh’s place in the batting order. If the team sees him as a specialist finisher, it may weigh his power and potential against his recent output. If it wants a more flexible middle-order batter, the auction could offer candidates with a broader range of skills.
Jayant Yadav’s limited opportunities
Jayant Yadav’s situation is different from that of the two batters. The 36-year-old off-spinner has represented India in six Test matches and two One-Day Internationals, but his opportunities in Gujarat’s IPL side have reportedly been scarce. After joining GT in 2023, he has played only one match for the franchise, according to the report.
That limited game time makes it difficult to judge his current value solely through IPL performances. A squad member may also provide training support, experience or specialist cover, particularly during a long tournament. However, if a player rarely features in the playing XI, team management must decide whether that depth role is worth maintaining or whether the slot could be used to develop another option.
What this could mean for GT’s IPL 2027 auction strategy
The reported debate highlights a familiar challenge for IPL teams: balancing continuity with the need to improve. Coaches may value players they trust in the dressing room and understand tactically, while franchise officials may focus on recent output, squad flexibility and the value of each roster spot. Neither approach alone guarantees success; the strongest decisions usually account for performance, role clarity and future potential.
For Gujarat Titans, the next steps will likely depend on the final retention rules, the availability of suitable replacements and the team’s assessment of its biggest gaps. A new finisher, an additional spin option or a younger all-rounder could influence the future of the players in question. Conversely, if GT believe their existing squad members can rebound, retaining them may preserve experience and continuity.
At this stage, any IPL 2027 prediction about Tewatia, Shahrukh or Jayant remaining with Gujarat should be treated cautiously. The claims about Nehra’s preferences have not been confirmed by GT, and the franchise has not announced its auction plans. What is clear is that their recent records and roles are likely to be examined closely as the team prepares for a crucial squad-building period.
