“I played accordingly”: Ajinkya Rahane opens up on his batting transformation after joining CSK

Ajinkya Rahane Announces Retirement from Cricket

The cricket world was taken by surprise when former India National Cricket Team captain, Ajinkya Rahane, recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Rahane, known for his calm demeanor and solid batting technique, has left a lasting impact on the cricketing fraternity.

Rahane’s Transformation in T20 Cricket

One of the most surprising revelations following Rahane’s retirement was his decision to bat aggressively in T20 cricket, especially after joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad. In a recent interview with the Indian Express, Rahane shared insights into this transformation that occurred during his stint with CSK in the IPL.

“Before IPL 2023, I spent two months preparing and worked on expanding my range of shots. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also made one thing very clear: Whenever I got an opportunity, they would back me completely,” Rahane explained.

Rahane emphasized the role of clarity and backing from the team management in allowing him to showcase a more aggressive batting style. His innings against Mumbai, which he described as a turning point, highlighted the impact of his preparation and CSK’s support.

Rahane’s Reflection on Batting Role

Reflecting on his batting role post his stint with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Rahane acknowledged the challenges he faced in maintaining a high strike rate. He credited his time with RR for instilling in him the ability to anchor innings and play according to the team’s requirements.

“A player needs confidence and surety to play with freedom. Before DC, I played for RR for eight years. My job was to anchor the innings while others attacked around me. I played accordingly,” Rahane shared.

Rahane’s Leadership at KKR

Aside from his batting exploits, Rahane also shed light on his captaincy stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. Despite facing challenges in leading a relatively inexperienced team, Rahane adopted a vocal approach to shield his teammates from undue pressure.

“I was vocal because I wanted to take the pressure away from my teammates, especially our inexperienced bowling attack. I wanted people to focus on me instead of the team so the players could perform freely,” Rahane stated.

While KKR’s performance under Rahane’s leadership may not have met expectations, he expressed his belief in the team’s potential and the need for a different leadership style to bring out the best in his players.
