IPL 2027: Prashant Veer, Kartik Sharma’s CSK futures in doubt despite ₹14.2 crore price tag

CSK’s IPL 2027 Retention Prediction: Could Prashant Veer Be Released Before the Mini-Auction?

Chennai Super Kings could face a significant squad decision ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, with reports suggesting the five-time champions may consider releasing one of their two high-priced young recruits, Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. Both players were signed for a reported INR 14.2 crore each, a substantial investment in emerging talent.

The pair arrived with expectations of adding youth and versatility to CSK’s roster. Their first IPL season, however, produced contrasting results. Kartik Sharma made a stronger case for a place in the team with a useful run of middle-order performances, while Veer’s limited impact with both bat and ball could leave his future under scrutiny. No final decision has been announced, and CSK’s eventual choice may depend as much on auction planning as on the players’ performances.

Prashant Veer’s First IPL Season Falls Short of Expectations

CSK placed considerable faith in the 20-year-old Uttar Pradesh all-rounder at the IPL 2026 auction. Veer, a left-arm spin bowler who can also contribute with the bat, was viewed as a promising long-term prospect. But his debut campaign did not deliver the all-round influence the franchise might have hoped for from such an expensive signing.

Across six matches, Veer scored 90 runs in five innings and did not take a wicket. His highest score was 43, made against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. That innings offered a glimpse of his batting potential, but his overall numbers left questions about how consistently he could affect matches.

Those figures do not necessarily settle the debate over Veer’s ability. Young players often need time to adjust to the pace, pressure and tactical demands of the IPL, particularly when they are expected to perform in more than one discipline. A small number of appearances can also make it difficult to assess a player’s full value. Still, CSK will need to weigh that development potential against the opportunity cost of keeping a large amount of its purse tied to one player.

Kartik Sharma’s Batting Gives CSK a Stronger Retention Case

Kartik Sharma had a more encouraging season. The 20-year-old Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter scored 295 runs in 11 matches, averaging 32.77. His 71-run innings against Lucknow Super Giants was a standout contribution and showed his ability to make an impact in the middle order.

For CSK, Kartik’s value may extend beyond his run total. A young batter who can keep wicket offers flexibility when a team is balancing its playing combination, while reliable middle-order scoring can help steady an innings or accelerate during the closing overs. His 2026 campaign does not guarantee retention, but it gives the franchise a clearer performance-based argument for continuing to invest in him.

The key question may be whether CSK believes Kartik can build on his first season and become a regular contributor. If the management sees him as a long-term option, retaining him could offer continuity. If it wants to reshape the squad, however, even a promising campaign may not be enough to protect a player from a broader auction strategy.

Why Releasing Veer Could Be an Auction Strategy

One possible reason for a Veer release would be financial flexibility rather than a complete loss of confidence in his potential. CSK reportedly have INR 2.4 crore remaining in their purse. With a reported INR 5 crore increase in the salary cap, their available auction funds could rise to approximately INR 7.4 crore, subject to the final rules and purse calculations.

Releasing a high-value player could give the franchise more room to address several squad needs at the auction. CSK could also consider bidding for Veer again at a lower price, although there is no guarantee that he would be available at a reduced cost—or that another team would not pursue him aggressively. Such a move would carry risk: the franchise could free up funds but lose a young player it still believes can develop into a valuable all-rounder.

A mini-auction often encourages teams to make difficult calls. Rather than treating a release as a simple verdict on a player’s talent, franchises may use it to rebalance their budgets, create room for specialist roles or respond to changes in team composition. In Veer’s case, the retention decision could reflect both his first-season returns and CSK’s assessment of the players likely to be available in December.

CSK’s Retention Prediction: Kartik Could Be Safer, but Nothing Is Confirmed

Based on the reported performances, Kartik appears to have the stronger case for retention, while Veer may be more vulnerable if CSK prioritises auction funds. That is a prediction, not a confirmed decision. The franchise has not publicly announced its plans for either player, and its final list will depend on internal assessments, squad balance and the value it expects to find at auction.

CSK’s deadline to finalise retained and released players is reportedly November 15, ahead of the mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Goa. Until the official list is released, speculation should be treated cautiously. A late change in strategy—or a decision to retain both players—remains possible.

PBKS Reportedly Stand by Marco Jansen

Elsewhere, Punjab Kings are reportedly not planning to release South African all-rounder Marco Jansen, despite speculation about a possible trade and a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. Jansen took nine wickets in 12 matches, with an economy rate above 10 and a bowling average exceeding 50. He also scored 51 runs in five innings.

Those IPL numbers were below expectations, but his recent international form may strengthen his standing. Jansen was named Player of the Series after South Africa’s three-Test series against Australia and has risen to the top of the ICC Test rankings for both bowlers and all-rounders. Test cricket and the IPL place different demands on players, so that success does not automatically guarantee a strong T20 season. It does, however, underline his quality and may give PBKS reason to retain faith in his broader ability.

What to Watch Before the IPL 2027 Auction

CSK’s decisions on Veer and Kartik will offer an early indication of how the franchise plans to approach the next season: invest in young players over time, or use the auction to target immediate squad balance. Kartik’s batting returns provide a persuasive case for continuity, while Veer’s age and all-round potential may still appeal to a management willing to take a longer view.

The most important factor will be how CSK values performance against price. If the franchise releases Veer, it may be a calculated attempt to gain flexibility—not necessarily a final judgment on his future. For supporters, the retention list will provide the first concrete clue about CSK’s IPL 2027 plans, but the mini-auction itself will determine whether the team’s prediction and strategy deliver the squad it needs.
