Ishan Kishan’s injury opens door for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s comeback to India XI vs New Zealand
India Await Ishan Kishan Fitness Update Ahead of Second T20I Against New Zealand
India have started their five-match T20I series against New Zealand with a thrilling win, but the victory may come at a cost. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan picked up a groin niggle during the opening match, and his availability for the second T20I in Christchurch remains uncertain.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said Kishan is unlikely to play unless he makes a full recovery. The Indian team will rely on its medical staff to assess the injury before finalising the playing XI. If Kishan is ruled out, young left-hander Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is among the leading candidates to replace him.
Kishan’s Injury Could Affect India’s Batting Order
Kotak confirmed that Kishan’s groin strain influenced India’s batting plans in the series opener. The team adjusted its order, with Tilak Varma moving up to No. 3 and Kishan batting at No. 5. Kishan scored one run from three deliveries before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Kotak said there had been speculation about the changes to the batting lineup, adding that Kishan’s fitness was a factor. He stressed that the decision on the wicketkeeper-batter’s participation would depend on the medical team’s advice.
“If Ishan doesn’t play, unless he recovers completely, which the medical team will advise, Vaibhav could definitely step in for him. He is one of the strongest contenders,” Kotak said.
India will be cautious about rushing Kishan back. A groin problem can affect a batter’s movement between the wickets, ability to change direction and comfort when fielding. With four matches still to come after the second T20I, the team may prefer to prioritise his recovery over taking an early risk.
Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is a Strong Replacement Option
Sooryavanshi’s name has emerged as a potential talking point ahead of the Christchurch match. The teenager has already represented India in T20Is, including appearances during the Asian Games campaign. He opened alongside Abhishek Sharma in that tournament, while Sanju Samson moved down the order.
Although Sooryavanshi has not featured in recent matches, he was part of the group for the opening game against New Zealand. He made a small but useful contribution as a substitute fielder, stopping a boundary at a key moment. His inclusion in the XI would offer India a left-handed batting option and another player capable of scoring quickly in the powerplay.
His T20I record gives the selectors reason to consider him: Sooryavanshi has scored 246 runs in eight appearances at a strike rate of 186.36, including two half-centuries. He also made 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, adding valuable experience in a high-pressure franchise competition.
Those numbers make him an intriguing option, but the team’s final choice will depend on its preferred combination. India could select Sooryavanshi as a like-for-like top-order replacement, or reshuffle the batting order if the management wants to preserve its established lineup. The decision will also depend on how the pitch and conditions in Christchurch are expected to play.
India’s Record Chase Sets Up an Exciting Series
The injury concern follows an outstanding opening performance from India. New Zealand posted 226, putting pressure on the visitors to produce a near-perfect chase. India responded with 230 for six in 19.4 overs, completing the highest successful run chase in the team’s T20I history.
Samson led the pursuit with 67 from 33 balls, combining clean hitting with smart placement. Captain Shreyas Iyer added 42 from 28 deliveries, helping India maintain momentum after early setbacks. Naman Dhir then delivered a decisive finish, remaining unbeaten on 42 from just 15 balls as India crossed the line with two balls to spare.
The result gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and provides a confidence boost ahead of the next fixture. It also demonstrated the depth of the batting lineup: even after losing wickets during a demanding chase, India had enough power and composure to keep the required run rate within reach.
Second T20I Prediction: Selection and Momentum in Focus
The main selection question ahead of Saturday’s second T20I is whether Kishan will be fit enough to play. If the medical team gives him the all-clear, India may retain its preferred combination. If he is unavailable, Sooryavanshi appears to be a strong contender, though the final decision will depend on the team’s tactical plans.
India’s prediction for the match will also be shaped by its ability to repeat the aggressive approach that worked in the opener. Chasing 226 requires more than boundary-hitting; it demands partnerships, calculated risks and contributions from the middle and lower order. The first match showed that India can recover from pressure, but New Zealand are likely to adjust their bowling plans after conceding such a large total.
For the hosts, the challenge will be to defend their runs more effectively and prevent India’s finishers from taking control late in the innings. For India, the priority is balancing momentum with sensible workload management—especially if Kishan’s injury remains a concern.
With the series finely poised at 1-0, the second T20I promises another high-scoring contest. India will aim to extend its lead, while New Zealand will look to level the series on home soil. The final team announcement, particularly the update on Kishan and the possible inclusion of Sooryavanshi, could provide the first major clue about how the match may unfold.
