Faf du Plessis picks Hardik Pandya as KKR captain, names Rohit Sharma or Jasprit Bumrah for MI
Faf du Plessis Predicts Possible IPL 2027 Captains as Franchises Prepare for Mini-Auction
With the IPL 2027 retention deadline approaching and the mini-auction expected to take place in the coming weeks, teams are weighing up more than player budgets. Several franchises may also need to settle questions about leadership, particularly after changes to squads, coaching groups and ownership have reshaped the landscape ahead of the new season.
Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has offered his prediction on who could lead a number of franchises in IPL 2027. His suggestions range from continuity at Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to possible changes at Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. They remain outside assessments rather than confirmed appointments, but they highlight the decisions teams may face before the tournament begins.
LSG could choose between Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh
Lucknow Super Giants are among the sides attracting attention after a reported trade involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav. With leadership options potentially changing, du Plessis identified Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh as candidates to captain the franchise. Nicholas Pooran, who served as vice-captain last season, may also be part of the discussion.
Du Plessis described Markram and Marsh as capable leaders, while noting that Marsh’s injury history could influence the decision. If LSG prioritise availability and continuity, Markram may have an advantage. The South African has previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and brings international leadership experience to the role.
Marsh, meanwhile, offers an assertive style and extensive experience in high-pressure cricket. The franchise’s choice could depend on more than reputation: a captain needs to be available for the full campaign, communicate effectively with the coaching staff and provide a clear role for the team’s senior players.
Du Plessis expects CSK and Rajasthan Royals to retain continuity
At Chennai Super Kings, du Plessis believes Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to remain captain. The franchise has already made significant changes to its coaching setup, and another major transition in the leadership group could add uncertainty. Although Sanju Samson has been mentioned as a potential option, du Plessis suggested that CSK may prefer to keep Gaikwad in charge.
Continuity can be valuable at a club known for building stable team environments. Retaining the same captain would allow Gaikwad to work with the revised coaching staff and continue developing his approach, rather than requiring the squad to adjust to a new leader at the same time as other changes take effect.
Rajasthan Royals also face questions about their captaincy. Reports have suggested that the franchise’s new owners may be considering alternatives to Riyan Parag, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has been discussed as a possible future leader. Du Plessis, however, backed Parag to continue in the role for IPL 2027.
Keeping Parag could offer the Royals a chance to build on an existing leadership arrangement. Any decision will likely depend on the club’s assessment of his progress, the balance of the squad and how the captaincy fits with the responsibilities of senior players such as Jaiswal.
Mumbai Indians could reconsider their captaincy plans
Mumbai Indians may have one of the most closely watched leadership decisions. Du Plessis said that, from the outside, Hardik Pandya’s captaincy had not appeared to work as intended and suggested the five-time champions could consider a change. He named former captain Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as possible alternatives.
Rohit has a long record of success with Mumbai and understands the expectations that come with leading the franchise. Bumrah would represent a different kind of appointment: a senior, highly respected player whose influence extends beyond his performances with the ball. Either option would bring its own considerations, including workload, team balance and the relationship between leadership and playing responsibilities.
Du Plessis stressed that his view was based on an outsider’s perspective, not inside knowledge of the dressing room. That distinction matters: captaincy decisions are shaped by conversations between players, coaches and management that are not always visible publicly. Mumbai’s final call may depend on whether the franchise believes its current leadership structure needs adjustment or simply more time.
Axar Patel remains du Plessis’ choice for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals have another potential leadership candidate in Rishabh Pant, who has been linked with a move from Lucknow. Even so, du Plessis expects Axar Patel to remain captain. That would give Delhi the option of preserving continuity while adding a prominent player who has previously held a major role with the franchise.
For the Capitals, the challenge will be deciding how to use their leadership depth without creating competing centres of authority. If Axar stays captain, Pant’s experience could still be valuable in the dressing room and on the field. The team’s performance, the players’ roles and the coaching group’s preferences will all shape the final arrangement.
Could KKR pursue Hardik Pandya?
Kolkata Knight Riders may have the most difficult captaincy puzzle following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement. Du Plessis said the situation was hard to predict from the outside, particularly because a mini-auction may offer limited access to proven leaders. If KKR cannot secure an established captain through a trade or another route, they may need to promote someone already in the squad.
Du Plessis floated Rinku Singh as an internal possibility, while also raising the prospect of KKR trading for Hardik Pandya and appointing him captain. That would be a major move, though it would depend on Mumbai’s plans and the terms of any potential deal. Hardik’s experience as a leader could appeal to KKR, but a trade would also have significant implications for squad construction and the franchise’s auction strategy.
Rinku, by contrast, would represent a longer-term internal option. His standing within the team and his performances in pressure situations could make him a candidate, although appointing a player with limited captaincy experience would require strong support from the coaching staff and senior members of the squad.
IPL 2027 captaincy decisions could shape auction strategies
The captaincy debate is closely connected to retention and recruitment. Teams must consider salary budgets, overseas-player limits, availability, tactical needs and the balance between established stars and emerging talent. A captain is not simply a name on the team sheet: the role can influence how a franchise approaches the auction, which players it retains and what kind of squad it builds.
Du Plessis’ predictions offer a snapshot of the possibilities, not a definitive guide to the final line-ups. Until franchises confirm their retentions, trades and appointments, several leadership questions will remain open. The coming weeks could therefore be as important for team strategy as the mini-auction itself, with each club aiming to enter IPL 2027 with a settled captain and a clear plan.
