Shaun Tait returns to PSL as Lahore Qalandars’ head coach
Shaun Tait Named Lahore Qalandars Head Coach for PSL 2027
Lahore Qalandars have appointed former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait as head coach for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2027, giving the franchise a familiar figure to lead its next campaign. Tait will replace South African coach Russell Domingo and work with the Shaheen Afridi-led side as it looks to respond to a disappointing finish in the previous season.
The 43-year-old brings international and franchise coaching experience, including previous assignments with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and PSL teams. His appointment also builds on an existing relationship with Lahore: Tait is set to coach the Qalandars in the Global Super League (GSL) 2026 before taking charge of the team in the PSL.
Sameen Rana Confirms Tait’s Appointment
Lahore Qalandars director Sameen Rana confirmed the decision during a podcast on Thursday, November 5, 2026. According to Rana, the franchise had already reached an agreement with Tait for the GSL 2026, with the understanding that he would continue in the role for the PSL season that follows.
“He will continue, yeah. We had an agreement with him during the GSL. We had told him to be our head coach in GSL 2026 itself,” Rana said.
The move gives Tait an opportunity to work with the Qalandars’ squad before the PSL 2027 campaign begins. That early involvement could help him assess the team’s strengths, identify areas that need attention and establish his coaching approach ahead of the league’s high-pressure matches.
What Tait Could Bring to Lahore Qalandars
As a former fast bowler renowned for his pace, Tait is likely to offer particular insight into the development and management of the Qalandars’ bowling attack. His experience as a specialist bowling coach may prove valuable in planning for different conditions, supporting young quicks and helping bowlers maintain their effectiveness across a demanding T20 tournament.
His appointment also gives Lahore a coach with experience in several cricket environments across the region. Working with national teams and franchise sides has exposed Tait to different player groups, competition formats and tactical demands. For a club that has previously built its identity around aggressive cricket and a strong pace attack, that background could be a useful fit.
Still, a head coach’s impact is not measured by reputation alone. Tait will need to work closely with captain Shaheen Afridi and the rest of the coaching staff to shape a consistent game plan. Lahore’s PSL 2027 prediction will depend on more than the appointment itself: squad balance, player availability, form and execution under pressure will all influence the team’s prospects.
From Australia Fast Bowler to International Coach
Tait represented Australia in three Test matches, 35 One-Day Internationals and 21 T20 Internationals. He was part of the Australian side that won the 2007 Cricket World Cup and became widely recognised for his ability to bowl at extreme pace during his playing career.
After retiring from international cricket, he moved into coaching and took on roles with national teams and professional franchises. His experience includes two spells with Pakistan as a fast-bowling coach. He first joined the national setup in February 2022 and remained through early 2023. In October 2026, he returned to the role, replacing Ashley Noffke ahead of Pakistan’s T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Tait also worked as Bangladesh’s pace-bowling coach after joining the team in May 2025. He stepped down after roughly a year, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and reduce the demands of travel. Earlier, in 2021, he served as a bowling consultant to Afghanistan and was involved with the team during the T20 World Cup.
Experience Across Franchise Cricket
At club level, Tait has worked with Quetta Gladiators in the PSL, taking on a coaching role in 2024. His franchise experience also includes assignments with Karachi Kings and Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League. The GSL 2026 will provide his first opportunity to lead Lahore Qalandars before the franchise’s next PSL campaign.
That range of experience may help him adapt to the varied demands of the PSL, where coaches must manage international stars, emerging local players and a compressed schedule. It also gives him a chance to build on his familiarity with Pakistan cricket rather than entering the league without prior knowledge of its players and conditions.
Lahore Qalandars Aim to Rebound After 2026
The Qalandars have experienced one of the most dramatic journeys in PSL history. After struggling near the bottom of the standings during their early seasons, they transformed into title contenders and won championships in 2022, 2023 and 2025.
The team’s rise accelerated under Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy, with Lahore claiming back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. They added a third championship in 2025, defeating Quetta Gladiators by six wickets. Those successes established the Qalandars as one of the competition’s most accomplished sides and raised expectations among supporters.
However, the 2026 season brought a setback. Lahore finished fifth and failed to qualify for the playoffs, leaving the franchise with a clear incentive to reassess its approach. Tait’s appointment is an early sign that the team is preparing for a fresh push, although the coach will need to help turn that ambition into consistent performances.
PSL 2027 Outlook: A New Chapter for the Qalandars
For Lahore, the decision to promote Tait from the GSL setup offers continuity while still marking a change in leadership after Domingo’s departure. His knowledge of Pakistan cricket and experience with fast bowlers could help the team rebuild momentum, particularly if the Qalandars can maintain the core qualities that powered their title-winning seasons.
Supporters will be watching to see how Tait shapes the bowling strategy, works alongside Afridi and responds to the lessons of 2026. The Qalandars have already shown that they can recover from difficult periods, but the PSL is highly competitive and past titles offer no guarantee of future success. For now, Tait’s appointment gives the franchise a new direction—and makes Lahore one of the teams to follow as preparations for PSL 2027 gather pace.
