Kumar Kushagra Named as Ishan Kishan’s Cover Ahead of India’s Second T20I Against New Zealand

India have called up wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra as cover for Ishan Kishan ahead of the second T20I against New Zealand. The match is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, in Christchurch, with Kishan’s availability in doubt after he suffered an injury during the series opener.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kishan sustained a low-grade strain in his right adductor during the first match. In a statement released on Friday evening, the board said its medical team would continue to monitor his recovery. Kushagra, who is already in New Zealand with the India A squad, has been selected to join the senior team as cover.

The call-up gives India an additional wicketkeeping option while the team waits for an update on Kishan. It does not, by itself, confirm that Kushagra will feature in the playing XI. India’s final selection will depend on Kishan’s fitness and the team management’s preferred balance for the Christchurch match.

Who Could Replace Ishan Kishan in the Playing XI?

If Kishan is ruled out, India have more than one option. Kushagra could be considered as a like-for-like wicketkeeper-batter, while teenage batting prospect Vaibhav Suryavanshi has also been discussed as a possible addition to the lineup. The decision will likely depend on whether India prioritise specialist wicketkeeping cover or another aggressive top-order batter.

Suryavanshi has not featured for India in a T20I since the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. He also missed the home T20I series against the West Indies and was absent from the first match against New Zealand. His possible inclusion would add a fresh dimension to the batting order, although the team may prefer to retain its existing combination after a successful opening performance.

India began the series with a high-scoring victory, chasing down New Zealand’s total of 226. The result was a landmark achievement: India completed their biggest successful T20I run chase by the first-innings total set by their opponent. Sanju Samson’s innings of more than 60 runs helped establish momentum, before captain Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir produced attacking contributions through the middle order.

That performance gives India some flexibility ahead of the second match. The team could make a direct replacement if Kishan is unavailable, or adjust the order to preserve its aggressive approach. A final prediction on the playing XI remains uncertain until the medical update and team selection are announced.

Kumar Kushagra: A Promising Domestic Wicketkeeper-Batter

Kushagra, 22, is from Bokaro in Jharkhand and has built a strong reputation in Indian domestic cricket. Like Kishan, he is a wicketkeeper who can contribute as a batter. He represents Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, although he is still seeking a sustained opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in the T20 competition.

His domestic record, particularly in longer formats, offers a clear picture of his potential. Kushagra has scored 2,507 runs in 61 first-class matches at an average of 42.49. In List A cricket, he has averaged 51.37 across 35 innings—figures that underline his ability to produce substantial scores as well as play a supporting role.

Recent performances have added to his credentials. Kushagra scored a century in a multi-day match against Australia in Puducherry and also reached three figures in the final of the Duleep Trophy in September. Those innings demonstrated his capacity to adapt to different conditions, including the heat and humidity of Chennai.

Being named as Kishan’s cover is an important opportunity, but it should not be mistaken for confirmation of an international debut in the second T20I. Kushagra’s immediate role is to provide the squad with another wicketkeeping option and ensure India have cover should Kishan be unable to play.

What India’s Selection Could Mean for the Series

India’s first-match chase has put the hosts under pressure to respond, while also giving the visitors a chance to build a 2–0 lead. The selection question is therefore more than a simple injury replacement: the team must weigh continuity against the benefits of introducing a different player or reshaping its batting order.

If Kishan recovers in time, India may choose to keep the same combination. If he is unavailable, Kushagra offers wicketkeeping cover and a chance to strengthen the squad’s depth. Suryavanshi, meanwhile, represents a more attacking alternative, though his inclusion would require the management to decide how best to arrange the top order.

For now, the key factor is Kishan’s recovery from the right adductor strain. The BCCI has confirmed that he is being monitored, but has not announced whether he will be fit for Saturday. India’s final lineup—and any prediction about the impact of the change—will become clearer closer to the start of the second T20I.
