Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan Test Series: Brian Bennett to Lead the Chevrons in Sharjah

Zimbabwe are preparing to turn the page on a difficult run in white-ball cricket when they face Afghanistan in a two-match Test series at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The Chevrons have named Brian Bennett as captain, with regular skipper Richard Ngarava unavailable as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

The series offers Zimbabwe a chance to reset in the longer format and test the depth of a squad that includes experienced batters, returning players and several options in both pace and spin. Afghanistan, meanwhile, arrive after a strong run against Zimbabwe in limited-overs cricket, setting up an intriguing contest as the teams switch to Test cricket.

Zimbabwe seek a response after white-ball defeats

Zimbabwe Cricket announced its squad on Wednesday, confirming that vice-captain Bennett will take charge in Ngarava’s absence. The leadership change comes after a challenging stretch for the Chevrons: Afghanistan swept their recent T20I series 3-0, then defeated Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the final of a tri-series that also featured Bangladesh.

Those results give Zimbabwe extra motivation heading into the Tests, although the format presents a very different challenge. Longer matches reward patience, disciplined bowling and the ability to build partnerships over time—areas in which Zimbabwe will hope to make a stronger impression.

The squad retains much of the group that produced a notable result earlier in the year, when Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by an innings and 85 runs at Harare Sports Club. That performance showed what the side can achieve when its batting and bowling work together. Repeating that level away from home, however, will require careful adaptation to Sharjah’s conditions.

Brian Bennett faces important decisions with the bat

Bennett will have several experienced players to call on as he shapes Zimbabwe’s batting order. Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine bring substantial international experience, while Innocent Kaia, Ben Curran, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Wessly Madhevere add further options across the top and middle order.

The competition for places could be one of the series’ key storylines. Zimbabwe’s selectors have assembled a group with a mix of proven campaigners and players looking to establish themselves in Test cricket. The challenge will be finding combinations that can withstand Afghanistan’s bowling attack and make the most of opportunities to score.

For Bennett, the captaincy will involve more than setting the field. He will need to manage the tempo of the innings, identify dependable partnerships and make timely decisions about when to attack. A strong start from the top order could help Zimbabwe settle into the series, particularly if the team is batting under pressure after recent defeats.

Cremer returns as Zimbabwe strengthen their spin options

Veteran leg-spinner Graeme Cremer is among the notable additions to the Test squad. His experience could be valuable in Sharjah, where spin may become increasingly influential as matches progress. Vincent Masekesa and Wellington Masakadza provide further frontline options, giving Zimbabwe several ways to shape their attack depending on the pitch and match situation.

Kundai Matigimu and Masekesa have returned to the Test group, while Antum Naqvi has been included after meeting the International Cricket Council’s eligibility requirements to represent Zimbabwe. Naqvi, who was born in Belgium and raised in Australia, had previously faced paperwork delays before becoming available for selection.

The pace attack will be led by Blessing Muzarabani, with Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri, Matigimu and uncapped Ernest Masuku also named. Muzarabani’s ability to generate pace and bounce makes him a central figure in Zimbabwe’s plans, while the supporting seamers will be expected to maintain pressure and provide control from the other end.

Injuries leave gaps in the bowling group

Ngarava remains sidelined with the back problem that also kept him out of the recent ODI and T20I matches. The left-arm fast bowler is an important part of Zimbabwe’s attack, and his absence means the other seamers will need to share the workload across the two Tests.

Tanaka Chivanga is also unavailable after suffering an Achilles tendon injury during practice. He missed Zimbabwe’s home series against Australia and will not feature against Afghanistan. With two fast bowlers out, the squad’s depth—and the fitness of those selected—could prove especially important over the course of the series.

Test series prediction: experience and adaptability could decide the contest

On paper, Afghanistan will take confidence from their recent white-ball success, but those results do not automatically determine the outcome in Test cricket. The longer format places greater emphasis on concentration, endurance and adapting to changing conditions. Zimbabwe’s earlier victory over Bangladesh also suggests the Chevrons have the ability to compete when their senior players deliver.

A key factor in any series prediction will be how effectively Zimbabwe’s batters handle Afghanistan’s attack and whether their spinners can make an impact as the matches develop. The hosts will also need to use their pace resources efficiently in Ngarava’s absence. For Afghanistan, carrying their recent momentum into a format that demands sustained discipline will be the challenge.

Both Tests will be played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The first is scheduled for November 5–9, with the second set for November 13–17. The matches fall outside the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle, as Zimbabwe are not among the competition’s top nine teams. Even so, the series offers valuable international experience and an opportunity for both sides to assess their Test combinations.
