Navdeep Saini set to miss Ranji Trophy 2026-27 match for Delhi; KKR pacer named as replacement

Delhi vs Jharkhand: Navdeep Saini Injury Could Prompt Major Ranji Trophy Changes

Delhi are expected to make several changes to their playing XI for their third match of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season, with a contest against Jharkhand beginning in Ranchi on October 26. The biggest concern for the visitors is the likely absence of experienced fast bowler Navdeep Saini, who is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury.

The setback comes at a difficult time for Delhi, who are still searching for their first victory of the campaign. With conditions in Ranchi potentially encouraging spin, the team could also adjust its bowling balance and give teenage left-arm spinner Aman Chaudhary his First-Class debut. The selection decisions will be important as Delhi look to turn promising performances into a result.

Navdeep Saini likely to miss Delhi’s Ranchi fixture

Saini is expected to sit out the Jharkhand match after picking up a hamstring problem. His absence would remove a senior pace option from Delhi’s attack, particularly significant in a four-day game where fast bowlers are often required to build sustained pressure across long spells.

The right-arm quick featured in Delhi’s previous match against Gujarat, bowling 23 overs and taking one wicket. While that match ended in a draw, Saini’s experience remains valuable to a side seeking consistency. Delhi’s medical and selection teams will need to weigh the risk of playing him against the importance of keeping him fit for the remainder of the season.

According to a report shared by PTI journalist Kushan Sarkar, Simarjeet Singh is likely to replace Saini in the XI. Simarjeet played Delhi’s opening-round match against Bengal in Kalyani but went wicketless across both innings. He was left out for the following fixture, so a return against Jharkhand would offer him an opportunity to make a stronger contribution.

Aman Chaudhary in line for First-Class debut

Delhi could also introduce young left-arm spinner Aman Chaudhary, who has reportedly impressed during practice sessions. A debut would be a significant step for the teenager and could give the team a different angle in its bowling attack, particularly if the Ranchi surface offers assistance to slower bowlers as the match progresses.

Aman’s selection may come at the expense of either Divij Mehra or Money Grewal. The final decision is likely to depend on the pitch, the balance Delhi want between pace and spin, and the conditions on the morning of the match. A three-spinner combination would be a clear indication that Delhi believe spin could play a decisive role.

If Aman is selected, he could join Hrithik Shokeen and Sumit Mathur in the spin group. Captain Ayush Badoni can also provide part-time overs, while all-round options such as Priyansh Arya and Ayush Doseja may give Delhi additional flexibility. That depth could help the captain manage workloads and respond to changing match conditions.

Delhi’s likely bowling strategy against Jharkhand

The reported selection plan points towards a bowling attack built around variety. Simarjeet would provide a pace option in place of Saini, while Shokeen, Mathur and potentially Aman could offer different spin styles. Such a combination may be especially useful in a long-format match, where batters are tested by changes in pace, flight and angle over extended periods.

However, selecting three specialist spinners also carries a tactical risk. If the Ranchi pitch offers little turn or remains favourable to batting, Delhi may need their seamers to shoulder a heavier workload. The team will therefore have to assess the surface carefully before confirming its final XI. The prediction of a spin-heavy lineup remains dependent on conditions and late fitness updates.

Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni give Delhi batting confidence

Although Delhi have not yet won this season, their previous match against Gujarat showed the potential of their batting unit. Priyansh Arya produced an outstanding innings of 199, falling just one run short of a double century. His performance was supported by captain Ayush Badoni, who made 217, and Sumit Mathur, who added 92.

The contributions helped Delhi post 648 in their first innings, a substantial total that placed pressure on Gujarat. The visitors responded with 479, and the match ultimately ended in a draw. Delhi will take encouragement from the scale of their first-innings effort, though they will also know that converting strong positions into victories is essential in a demanding Ranji Trophy campaign.

The season began less positively for Delhi, who lost to Bengal by nine wickets in Kalyani. That defeat left them with little margin for error, making the Jharkhand fixture an important chance to build momentum. A win would not only improve their position but also reward the promising performances shown by their leading batters against Gujarat.

What Delhi need to get right in Ranchi

Delhi’s immediate challenge is to compensate for Saini’s likely absence without weakening the attack. Simarjeet’s possible return, combined with a potential debut for Aman, would give the side a fresh look. The key will be whether the younger spinner can handle the demands of First-Class cricket and whether Delhi’s other bowlers can maintain control for long spells.

With Arya and Badoni in form, Delhi have evidence that they can post a competitive total. The next step is to support that batting strength with disciplined bowling and sharper execution in the field. The match against Jharkhand will test the team’s adaptability, particularly if the Ranchi conditions favour spin as expected.

Delhi’s final selection should become clearer closer to the start of play. For now, the main prediction is that the side will make a pace-for-pace change for Saini while considering a debut for Aman Chaudhary. If both moves are confirmed, Delhi will enter the match with a notably different attack—and a crucial opportunity to claim their first win of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season.
