Ashwin Questions India’s Treatment of Kuldeep Yadav After West Indies T20I Series

India’s handling of Kuldeep Yadav has come under scrutiny after the left-arm wrist-spinner was left out of the playing XI for three consecutive matches in the T20I series against the West Indies. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the decision was harsh, arguing that one expensive outing should not outweigh Kuldeep’s record of delivering for the national team.

Kuldeep featured in the second T20I in Ranchi, where he took one wicket for 53 runs. With the match unfolding on a batting-friendly surface and both teams producing a high-scoring contest, his figures were costly. But Ashwin said the conditions and the wider context should be considered before placing responsibility on an individual bowler.

Kuldeep’s Ranchi Spell Came in a Run-Filled Match

The five-match T20I series finished level at 2-2 after the final game was abandoned because of rain in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17. Kuldeep’s appearance in Ranchi on October 9 proved to be his last of the series. He was omitted from India’s line-up for the remaining matches after conceding 53 runs while taking one wicket.

Ranchi offered little relief for the bowlers. India posted a formidable total of 249, but the West Indies chased it down in just 18.3 overs. Captain Shai Hope led the pursuit with an unbeaten 102 from 45 deliveries, earning Player of the Match honours and underlining how difficult it was for the Indian attack to contain the opposition.

The Ranchi game was part of a broader pattern. The series regularly produced aggressive batting, with both sides passing 200 in three successive matches after the opener. On pitches that rewarded stroke-making, bowlers had limited margin for error: even a good delivery could disappear to the boundary, while one loose ball could quickly change the momentum.

That context is central to the debate over Kuldeep’s selection. His 1/53 figures were below his usual standards, but the scorecard alone does not tell the full story of a match in which the West Indies scored at a remarkable pace. For a specialist spinner, being judged on a single high-scoring outing can be particularly severe when conditions offer little assistance.

Ashwin Says One Difficult Game Should Not Define Kuldeep

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin questioned the decision to leave Kuldeep out for the rest of the series. He pointed to the spinner’s past contributions for India and suggested that the team’s selection approach has not consistently given him the trust his performances warrant.

“Kuldeep has produced results over the years, and it is unfair to pin the blame on one bowler when conditions are against him,” Ashwin said. He also observed that Kuldeep has not always been treated as a first-choice option under the current team management, describing that situation as unfortunate.

Ashwin’s comments touch on a recurring challenge in international cricket: balancing recent form with a player’s longer-term value. Teams must respond to match conditions and results, but frequent changes can make it difficult for players to build rhythm and confidence. For a wrist-spinner, who often relies on variation, control and attacking intent, regular opportunities can be especially important.

India’s decision may have been an attempt to reshape the bowling combination after the Ranchi defeat. Yet the series’ batting-friendly conditions raise a fair question: should a bowler be dropped after one expensive spell when the entire attack was under pressure? Ashwin’s view is that Kuldeep deserved more consideration before being sidelined.

Ashwin’s Prediction: Varun Chakravarthy Could Get the Nod

Ashwin also offered a prediction about India’s spin options for the upcoming away series in New Zealand. With all-rounder Hardik Pandya not yet fit to play, he expects mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy could be selected ahead of Kuldeep as India’s frontline spin option.

That forecast comes with an important qualification. Varun has also faced fitness concerns after suffering a side strain, so his availability and readiness will need to be assessed before the team finalises its plans. His selection could depend not only on his recovery but also on the balance India want in their attack for New Zealand conditions.

Ashwin noted that Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are also likely to be part of the selection discussion. Both offer more than spin: Jadeja brings experience, accuracy and batting depth, while Sundar can contribute with the bat and provide control in the powerplay. Their presence could encourage India to choose a more conservative combination, potentially leaving out a specialist attacking spinner.

“With Hardik Pandya not yet back, I expect Varun Chakravarthy to get the nod ahead of Kuldeep, though it will be interesting to see how he returns from his side strain,” Ashwin said. He added that India might opt for Jadeja and Sundar and leave out an attacking spin option, although he hoped the team would not take that route.

India’s Spin Selection Could Shape the New Zealand Tour

The choice between Kuldeep, Varun, Jadeja and Sundar will depend on more than individual reputations. Team management will need to weigh fitness, recent form, the expected conditions and the role each player can perform. An away series can also demand a different approach from a run-heavy T20I contest, where totals above 200 became routine.

For Kuldeep, the immediate challenge is to turn his next opportunity into a compelling case for regular selection. His record gives him a strong foundation, but competition within India’s spin group remains intense. Varun offers a different style, while Jadeja and Sundar provide all-round value that can influence the balance of the XI.

Ashwin’s defence of Kuldeep has therefore opened a wider conversation about selection consistency and how India respond to difficult conditions. The Ranchi figures were expensive, but they came in a match shaped by exceptional batting from Shai Hope and the West Indies. Whether Kuldeep returns for the New Zealand series—or Ashwin’s prediction about Varun proves correct—will be one of the key questions facing India’s selectors.
